SHRIFFS OFFICE INVESTIGATION LOCATES IN ARREST OF FELON FOR FIREARMS AND EXPLOSIVES OFFENSES
After receiving reports of shots fired in the area of Grape Creek Road and Ute Pass, the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office initiated an investigation into the complaints.
During the investigation, probable cause was developed to charge Rene Ricardo Leija with the offense of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. Additionally, a search warrant was obtained for his residence.
On Wednesday, April 19, 2023, investigators with the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office executed a search and arrest warrant for Rene Ricardo Leija in the 6700 block of Grape Creek Road. Leija was taken into custody and the ensuing search of his residence resulted in the recovery of the potential pipe bombs.
After the discovery of the bombs, the Abilene Police Department bomb squad was summoned to the scene as well as federal agents. The devices were secured and will be submitted to the ATF lab for further examination.
Leija was subsequently charged with possession of components of explosives. This remains an active investigation. Mr. Leija remains in the Tom Green County Jail on a $125,000.00 bond.
